Royal Holloway opened its doors in 1886 in Egham, a small country town on the outskirts of London. The Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF) placed the university in the top 25% in the UK, with 81% of its research rated world-leading or internationally excellent. The university's scientists address some of the leading global problems, such as protection against cyber attacks and the rapidly declining bee population. The university plays an important role as an advisor to government bodies and in drafting new legislation. Royal Holloway is ranked 34th in the UK and 231st in the QS World University Rankings 2015. Its geography department is considered the best in the country by the REF. Other subjects for which it is in the top 10 include mathematics, psychology, music, media arts and marketing. Some programs offer the opportunity for an Erasmus exchange as well as a work placement, during which the student pays between 15-20% of the annual fee. The university campus is set on 135 acres of green space, and its main building is considered one of the most beautiful university buildings in the world. Egham has easy train access to London (40 minutes), which is just 19 miles away. Royal Holloway offers an amazing mix of the modern - its facilities and equipment - and the historic - the university building.
Egham is a small university town on the outskirts of London. It has a rich history dating back to ancient times. In the 11th century it was mentioned in the Domesday Book, compiled under William the Conqueror as the record of a great survey the king ordered to be carried out. Today it is home to a huge research center of the corporate giant Procter & Gamble. Near the town there is a fantastic amusement park - Thorpe Park. Although small, the town offers excellent nightlife for its students.
