A Trip to Machu Picchu, Peru

Back in 2012 I went on my last student summer job – the last trip I needed to be sure that I wanted to travel the whole world.

Without much thought, in 2016 I decided to visit Peru, a country very different from anything I had seen. Comparing it with America and with the people I had met on my summer jobs in the USA, I can say that I found myself in a completely different world.

I could say a lot about Peru, but what is permanently etched in my mind is Machu Picchu. A place that, with its magic and remoteness, can make anyone hold their breath and remain speechless for a long time.

The journey there was more than long – from Lima, the capital of Peru, it took me a plane, a bus, a train and several hours on foot. Every kilometer proved to me what a wonderful place Peru is and how important a part of South America it is.

One of the most famous train lines in the world is the one that takes tourists to Aguas Calientes, a small town at the foot of Machu Picchu. From there, a 2-hour walk or a short bus ride takes you to the entrance of the national site.

This destination is one of the most visited, but the gates open at 6 in the morning, when it is almost empty and you can enjoy peace and solitude.

Exploring Machu Picchu takes a whole day and a lot of energy, but there's definitely no way anyone will be disappointed.
