Tips on how to find a second job during your summer work program:
Undoubtedly, one of the questions students ask before leaving on the Work and Travel USA program is:
How do I find a second job, and is it even possible?
I don't know of a student who has gone on a summer work program in the USA and hasn't managed to start a second job if they wanted one – and if there is such a person, we should declare them the unluckiest person ever.
Finding a second job is very easy, but you have to be very persistent. Every day you need to go around asking at stores, restaurants and hotels whether they're looking for seasonal workers. Sometimes it's quite tedious, because after a few rejections you may lose heart, but keep trying. If they didn't need you today, tomorrow could be your day.
Looking for a second job is always more fun with friends, but if employers have only one opening, they may not give it to you because there are several of you.
When you go looking for a job, be neat, clean and smiling so you can make a good impression.
As the old Bulgarian saying goes, "people meet you by your clothes and see you off by your mind."
Sometimes the places where you're looking for work may ask you to fill out an Application Form, so it's a good idea to carry a pen with you and fill out the Application Form right away, because later you might forget where to take it.
It's a good idea to get an American phone number before you start looking for work, because some employers may ask for a phone number to contact you on if a position opens up. If you don't want to get a phone number, you can use that of a friend you've met or traveled with on the summer work program.
And most importantly, take a job that you'll enjoy – it's important to have balance during these 4 months and, of course, to have fun.
Have a successful summer full of smiles!
