This small state packs an enormous amount of history, and many political figures such as John F. Kennedy grew up there. The state capital is Boston, which is considered the oldest historic city in Massachusetts – a great destination for a trip for culture and history lovers.
Another place you absolutely must visit during your summer work program, if you're not working there, is the island of Martha's Vineyard, which is just two hours from Boston. Its rolling sand dunes, beautiful beaches and cranberry bogs perfectly complement the views of the pretty candy-colored houses, the lighthouses along the shore and the yachts sailing around the coast. Beautiful Martha's Vineyard is also a favorite spot of the most famous and influential Americans. We can rightly call it the Presidential Island, because many U.S. presidents own houses on the island.
A few more interesting facts you can make use of during your Work and Travel program:
- The minimum wage in the state of Massachusetts as of January 2019 is $12.00 per hour;
- Boston is the city with the highest percentage of young people;
- This is a slightly strange fact, but did you know that in Rockport there's a house made entirely of newspapers? We didn't know either, and it's quite a curious fact! The building was built in 1922 by an engineer who wanted to build himself a summer house;
- The island of Martha's Vineyard is famous for several reasons, one of them being that the movie "Jaws" was filmed there;
- U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama spend their summer vacations on the island;
- Cape Cod is one of the biggest tourist destinations in New England. It is popular in the summer season due to its mild climate and cool summers. It is home to one of the longest beaches in North America – the Cape Cod National Seashore – over 50 km.
