Have you decided to go on a Work and Travel program in the USA and already chosen a job offer?
That's great! But if your employer doesn't provide housing, you will have to find some yourself.
We are here to help! Here are a few tips from experience:
- Search carefully
Always check that the listing is legitimate. Don't risk your summer, and don't transfer any money if anything about the offered housing makes you suspicious.
- Book a hostel/hotel
If you haven't managed to find housing in advance, or have decided that you'll have a better chance of finding something on the spot in the USA – an option we don't recommend – it is very important not to forget to book a hotel/hostel where you can stay while you search.
- You won't be the only one
Given the popularity of the Work and Travel program, you should be aware that you won't be the only one looking for housing. For this reason, it is very important to search ACTIVELY. The sooner you secure accommodation, the better!
- Read the lease carefully
Get to know your lease well. Questions such as which bills you will pay, what the landlord provides and which fees are included are especially important. Pay attention to the fine print!
- Don't violate the lease
When you move in, you will be asked for a deposit, and getting it back depends on you.
- Watch the number of roommates
Splitting the rent among more people sounds great, but is it? Make sure the number of roommates does not exceed the number allowed.
- Check out the neighborhood
An important factor in finding housing is also its location relative to your job, so you don't spend your summer on buses. And last but not least – your safety!
Of course, there are many Facebook groups for finding/offering housing, and as a client of NGB Consulting you get many privileges, one of which is assistance with your search.
Also, so that you don't have to experience problems with landlords and roommates firsthand, don't hesitate – stop by our offices for a consultation or simply get in touch with us.
