What is "One Academic Year in the USA"?

"ONE ACADEMIC YEAR IN THE USA" is a program for high school students. To qualify they have to be between 15 to 18 years old. For 10 months the student lives with a host family, which is selected in accordance with the student’s preferences.

 

Why should I participate?

In this program you will have the unique possibility as a participant in an intercultural exchange to live, study and share the experience of your peers in the US. You will have the chance to get to know “the country of unlimited possibilities”. The life in US as a student and the stay at an American host family will acquaint you with cultural differences and the American way of life, and allow you to become a citizen of the planet.

For many of you, the study in a foreign country begins with participation in this program, but the experience obtained lasts a lifetime.

The program “One academic year in America” will contribute to your development and will make you independent, mature and responsible. Furthermore a stay in a foreign country is very interesting and full of challenges.

 

Can I participate?

Yes!!!
If your are 15 to 18 years old;
If you know English;
If you have GPA of 4 or higher for the last two school years;
If you are highly motivated to study one academic year in the US.

 

What is necessary to participate in the program?

  • A recommendation from a teacher;
  • An academic record including subjects studied and grades for the last three years of education;
  • English test – SLEP test;
  • Personal interview in English with an enterprise representative.

 

What is the price of the program?

The annual cost is $4500 (USD), which covers the room and board expenses in the assigned family, enrollment in an American school, year around support from a local coordinator, insurance for 10 months and orientation in Bulgaria prior to the beginning of the school year.

The cost of one semester is $4000(USD), which covers the room and board expenses in the assigned family, enrollment in an American school, year around support from a local coordinator, insurance for 5 months and orientation in Bulgaria prior to the beginning of the school year.

 

What is included in the program?

  • Placement in a family and meal plan;
  • Education in a public school;
  • Information package materials pertaining to the program;
  • Meeting-orientation of the approved participants and their parents prior to the trip;
  • Orientation of the approved participants after the arrival in the States;
  • Certificate for completed classes in the USA;
  • Area representative responsible for the student;
  • Insurance.

 

What is not included in the program price?

  • SLEP test - 20 leva;
  • SEVIS fee - 180 USD ;
  • Fee for visa interview in the US embassy - 140 USD;
  • Airfare for the round trip ticket to USA;
  • Pocket-money.

 

Interesting facts about the schools

All participants in the program are placed in public schools, unless a private school is preferred. The program is available due to collaboration with 1600 of the most prominent schools in the USA. The school year in the USA, depending on the state, is divided into two semesters of 5 months or three terms of 3 months. American public school education is based on the test system. You can choose your own curriculum, including some mandatory courses, like English, Algebra, American History and sociology. The choice of courses is wide, varying from classical ones to photography, theater, journalism and many others.
